Real Estate Taxes

Due dates are July 9, 2024 and Sept. 9, 2024

We are happy to welcome you as usual to the Treasurer's office. We accept cash, checks as a form of payment for your real estate taxes. Most credit cards are accepted; instructions are on the back of the tax bill (additional fees apply).

Please be aware that it is necessary to wear a mask upon entering the courthouse. No cell phones, bags are purses are allowed past the security station. We are sorry for any inconvenience this might cause. Bring only what is necessary to pay your taxes.
Always bring your original tax bill in to pay your taxes.

Coles County Real Estate taxes are divided into two equal installments payable on the dates listed above. Penalty will be assessed on all late payments made after the first and second installment due dates. If mailing your payment please make sure it's postmarked by the due date. If mailing on the due date it is recommended to take your payment into the post office to be hand stamped. Just dropping your payment in the mail receptacle on the due date does not guarantee your payment will have the proper postmark.

For the future you might consider the Treasurer Payment Program. The Treasurer's office does offer a prepayment program based on the previous year's taxes. Payments can be made to the Coles County Collector in any amount you choose. It is not recommended that payments be made for more than last year's taxes. If taxpayers choose this option your 2020/2021 tax bill will reflect your payment. If you elect to use the Treasurers' Payment Program and your taxes are lower than previous years a refund will be issued. Payments will begin January 1st of any given tax year.

Taxes may be paid at the Office of the Coles County Collector/Treasurer at the Coles County Courthouse. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. To enter the Courthouse, please use the South (Jackson Street) entrance. Handicapped access is also available at the south entrance. Estate Taxes

Inheritance/Estate tax is collected locally in Illinois by each County Treasurer. Money collected is sent to the Illinois State Comptroller each month.

Mobile Homes

As of May 2015, there were 1,164 mobile homes in Coles County. In accordance with Illinois law, tax bills are issued to mobile home owners based on the age and square footage of the mobile home.

Current mobile home tax bills equal $83,175.47. Upon collection, that money will be disbursed among the various taxing bodies in the county.

Mobile home tax bills are mailed between March and May and represent a taxing period of Jan. 1 through Dec. 31 for the year in which they are billed. The bills are due 60 days after they are mailed.

By law, interest of $25 per month (not to exceed $100) is assessed after the due date.

Before buying a mobile home, please call the Coles County Treasurer's Office at (217) 348-0513 to be sure the taxes are paid to date. To obtain a clear title to the mobile home, you will need to file a Mobile Home Certification with the Secretary of State. The certification states that all taxes are paid in full. You can obtain the certification at the Treasurer's office.
